PARAMARIBO, Suriname (AP) -- Dozens of people in the South American country of Suriname have reported seeing an unidentified flying object near its capital, police and military officials said.

Police, military and air traffic control officials said they received reports of a brightly lit white object that appeared to fly back and forth, sometimes at great speed, during a two-hour period Wednesday morning [Oct 17] .

Local media also broadcast reports of the alleged sightings on the southern outskirts of the capital, and most television stations broadcast images of the object.

Surinamese Air Force Officer Tony Comvalius said there were no planes in the area at the time and he confirmed with the weather service that it was not a weather balloon. He said he also saw the object.

"I don't know what it was but was definitely not a flying object I know," Comvalius said.

Not everyone was convinced that the sighting was mysterious.

"I do not believe in UFOs. I think this sighting had something to do with some kind of scientific experiment, nothing more," said Sran Herewood, a 60-year-old civil servant.

UFO Spotted Above Paramaribo

An unidentified flying object (UFO) was seen yesterday above great parts of the capital city Paramaribo. The strange object was first seen around 10 am flying across the sky above the Flora neighborhood, where also the Suriname air force base is located. Various witnesses say that they saw something flying from one point of the sky to another with a very high speed. Back and forth, back and forth. Later on, the same object was spotted above the sky of Cupido-project, a neigborhood in west Paramaribo. There also it showed the same behavior, moving with an enormous speed from one end of the sky to a point near the sun. An hour later it disappeared.

UFO boven Paramaribo waargenomen

Gisterochtend rond 10.00 uur is een niet nader geïdentificeerd object boven delen van Paramaribo waargenomen. Bewoners van Flora en Kasabaholo hebben een uur lang kunnenzien hoe een onbekend vliegend voorwerkp van het ene punt in de lucht heel snel heen en weer vloog naar een ander punt dicht bij de zon. Er werd contact gemaakt met diverse instanties, waaronder de Meteorologische Dienst en de Luchtmacht van het Nationaal Leger. Het leger weet niet wat het was, terwijl Cor Becker, hoofd van de Meteorologische Dienst, ook geen verklaring heeft voor dit voorwerp. Het object dat gisteren is waargenomen, bleef enige tijd in het luchtruim hangen, waarna het met een grote snelheid in de richting zon vloog. Na enige tijd in de buurt van de zon te hebben gehangen, vloog het met een grote boog weer naar de plaats waar hij het eerst was waargenomen. Dit ging zo ongeveer een uur door. De Luchtmacht van het Nationaal Leger heeft met een vliegtuig het luchtruim onderzocht op ongeregeldheden. Op het moment waarop dat vliegtuig in de buurt van de plaats waar het object zich ophield kwam, verdween het verschijnsel en werd niet meer waargenomen. Vernomen wordt dat het geen spionagevliegtuig noch een meteoriet kan zijn, omdat die zich, net sterren, in een lijn voortbewegen.
