The March 1954 issue of Mechanics Today devoted a two-page spread to a still relatively unknown amateur astronomer of the day, one George Adamski. This colorful character with an equally colorful past had already co-authored a book with Desmond Leslie entitled, Flying Saucers Have Landed, in 1953 but his worldwide fame and notoriety were yet to follow. All the photographs that appeared in Mechanics Today remain among the most famous images of UFOs ever published, even though the credibility of their owner has since been soundly destroyed.
Adamski had sent four pictures of a so-called Venusian scout ship, accompanied by a brief declaration signed by a Mr D. J. Detwiler who was responsible for the film's development and subsequent printing of the saucer photo's.
