Ancient Cemetery Unearthed in Central Iran

TEHRAN (NNI): An ancient cemetery dating back to the third millennium B. C. was unearthed in Kerman province, central Iran, the Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.

The cemetery was found last week during archaeological excavations in Rameshk region, near the city of Kahnouj in the province, head of the cultural heritage department of Kerman province Mohammad Ebrahim Kazemi said.

A team of archaeologists of the department are currently conducting excavation works in the area in search for ancient civilizations, he said, adding that with the new discovery, the ancientry of the area under excavation is estimated at 5,000 years while it was previously supposed to be 2,500 years.

The official said that so far clay objects, including a unique "cup of dialogue among civilizations," have been unearthed in the region and the objects also include illustrated pots as well as ornaments.

He said the delicate illustrations and designs on the clay cup attest to the relationship between ancient India, Greece and the central Iranian plateau.

Rameshk, situated 160 kilometers from the city of Kahnouj, is a meeting point for the provinces of Kerman, Sistan-Baluchestan and Hormuzgan.
