Malaysian Villagers Capture Four Supernatural Beings
[Original headline: Man attacked in ‘oily man’ case]
ALOR STAR: Villagers in Kuala Kedah near here beat up a man yesterday after he allegedly tried to seize a talisman from a woman bomoh who had apparently “caught” an orang minyak (oily man).
The man’s face was swollen and bloodied in the incident that occurred at about 11am.
The bomoh was taking the talisman, which was wrapped in a cloth, to a mosque at the time. The orang minyak, believed to be a supernatural being able to take human form at night, was supposedly inside the cloth after being caught in a house.
Other villagers intervened and the man was taken to Kuala Kedah police station nearby.
He was later sent to Kota Star district police headquarters here.
News of the orang minyak had been circulating in Kuala Kedah villages over the past 10 days.
Some villagers had been keeping vigil at night fearing the orang minyak would harm maidens in their villages. They said that only women were able to see the being.
Yesterday, hundreds of villagers surrounded a house on the road to Tok Pasai bridge when news broke out that several orang minyak were in the house.
Hasrul Abu Hassan, 22, said that four orang minyak were caught by 2pm.
