Spectre Haunts Scottish Bakery
[Original headline: BAKERY STAFF SPOOKED BY A GHOST]
SPOOKED staff at a bakery yesterday told how they are being haunted by a mischievous ghost.
One worker at Bartons Bakery is convinced he has seen the spectre; another claims it grabbed her by the shoulder and others have heard it talk to them.
Among the spooky goings-on which staff claim have sent a shiver down their spine are:
taps have been turned on and off when there is no-one in the room;
a knife which was on a table began to spin around;
a shovel which was in the corner of a room suddenly flew across the floor;
loose change which was lying around
been put into neat piles
doors have opened and closed by themselves and objects such as clocks and fire extinguishers have been mysteriously moved around.
Norrie Farmer, sales manager at the bakery, said he has seen the phantom with his own eyes.
He told the Paisley Daily Express: “I hadn’t been drinking and I know what I saw. The ghost walked right past me.
“It looked like a man in his late 30s or early 40s and I think he had blue eyes and blond hair.
“I followed him with my eyes for a few seconds and then he disappeared. It was eerie.”
The haunted building in Ferry Road, Renfrew, was previously used as an ice cream factory and then as a sandwich factory. It lay empty for a few years before George Barton opened his bakery business there.
George said bizarre events started to happen soon after he moved in and he admits he has been left shaken by the spook.
He said: “It seems to be a mischievous ghost because it is always moving things around. I don’t think it wants to harm anyone but I get the feeling it doesn’t like us being here.
“There have been so many weird things going on and at least half a dozen staff at the bakery have had some sort of experience of the ghost.
“There was one time when I was baking rolls at about 3am and it was hot because the oven door was open but the air around me suddenly turned ice cold and then a knife which was lying on a table started to spin around. It freaked me out because I was the only person in the room.
“Taps have started to run when there is no-one near them and then the water goes off again by itself.
“Doors open and close and things are moved around. One member of staff said he heard the ghost shout his name in his ear and another said she felt someone grab her by the shoulder but, when she turned around, there was no-one there.
“I’m a food scientist and I consider myself to be a well-balanced person and I have tried to find a reasonable explanation for all of this but I can’t. I know some people might think I’m a fruitcake but if they had witnessed the things that I have seen then they would think the place is haunted too.”
Bakery manager Alfie Howie is another person who was sensed the ghost.
He said: "Some of the things which have happened have been quite frightening. I saw a shovel and a broom which were sitting in the corner of a room just fly across the floor by themselves and there was another time when I was listening to the football on the radio and it switched channels when there was no-one near it.”
Top psychic Derek Ogilvie, who is a Paisley Daily Express columnist, visited the bakery to investigate the staff’s claims and said it was one of the most amazing experiences of his life.
Derek believes the bakery is haunted by not one but TWO spirits.
He said: “As soon as I walked into this place I could tell there was something phenomenal happening.
“There are actually two ghosts here. One is a man and the other is a wee boy. They’re not directly related but there is a link between them and they look after each other.
“The boy is a poltergeist - that is a ghost which has excessive energy and wants to make itself known. He is the mischievous one who keeps moving things about.
“The older ghost has told me he died of a heart attack and he was also able to tell me a lot of things about the bakery and the people who work here.
“He’s not happy about the bakery being here. I’d like to spend more time at the bakery so I can find out what his intentions are.”
