13th Century Spirit Haunts English Coffee House
[Original headline: Customers spot ghostly goings-on at town cafe]
Spooky goings-on at a Spa coffee house have led its staff to believe the café is haunted -- by a spirit called Matilda.
Adrian Hibell, the owner of Spats Coffee House, hasn't witnessed any bumps in the night but he has been told on two different occasions that he has a ghost stood next to his cake stand in the High Street café.
Speaking exclusively to the Advertiser, Adrian explained the strange incidents.
He said: "A couple of weeks ago I had a lady come into my shop and whilst drinking her coffee told me I had a ghost standing by my cake stand!
"Then a few days later another lady, in a totally separate incident, also told me about the ghost by the cake stand.
" I really couldn't believe it."
The first customer returned to the shop just last week and told him about the spirit and what she looked like.
Adrian said: "Apparently, Matilda -- the spirit -- is from the 13th century, in her 60s and died on a ducking stool by the canal.
"She told my customer she had been looking after the place and keeping it tidy.
"She also told the lady how she hates mobile phones.
"I'm quite excited about the whole thing really and am not frightened at all.
"Some of the things the lady was telling me were just so spot on.
"She really couldn't have known the information any other way.
"I do believe Matilda is looking after my café, it's just a shame she doesn't do the vacuuming," he laughingly added.
