The Coventry University team said the experiment in the cellar in the city lent further weight to a theory that uneasiness caused by infra-sound may lead people to feel ghostly presences or catch glimpses of apparitions.
Vic Tandy said the study uncovered infra-sound in the cellar, beneath a tourist information office, at a frequency previously recorded in a haunted laboratory.
Tandy said inaudible noise at around 19 Hertz was recorded using a precision sound-level meter, the same level found in the laboratory during a previous study.
"For a number of years infra-sound at certain frequencies has been known to cause feelings of nausea and unease. It would appear that the presence of infra-sound can reasonably be held responsible for a lot of reported ghostly activity and unease experienced in certain buildings," Tandy said.-
