PUZZLEMENT AS ORBS MULTIPLY IN READER'S PHOTO'S

The following two pictures were submitted by reader Ian Marshall, of Manchester, England. He's puzzled because both were taken in the same room on the same evening. Yet in the first picture no orb-like phenomena can be seen. This contrasts sharply with the second image and that, surely, must constitute something of an orb-fest!

Here's what Ian has to say, "I have been viewing your site this evening 1/03/03 and have seen quite a few pictures of 'orbs'. I bought a new Fuji Finepics 2400 digital camera a while ago. At first everything seemed fine, no worries, but over the last few weeks more and more 'orbs' have been captured on snaps. I have checked the lens and whatever I can for dirt, marks ....anything but it is clear the 'orbs' are not there all the time only occasionally.

"I have attached a couple of photo's taken this evening; one of them clear but the next one I didn't need my glasses to see them. I would like to understand more if you could help me."

In a follow-up e-mail Ian adds, "Over the last few weeks I have been reading more and more about the said objects and the more I read the more interesting it gets. I have talked to many people who have seen the same sort of things that we are experiencing here, we didn't realise this is so common".

So, has Ian unwittingly captured a room bursting with a multiplicity of orbs, or is there a more rational explanation? I believe there is an answer. In the anomaly-loaded second image we see something else besides orbs that does not appear in Ian's first picture. Have you spotted it?

A picture hanging on the wall [right] has reflected some of the stray flash from Ian's camera and bounced it across the room where it appears on a facing wall and curtain. Similarly bounced flash has re-entered the camera lens from the polished metal fixture of Ian's lighting and ceiling fan, immediately in front of the photographer. It's this last event I believe is responsible for the anomaly you see, as the stray bright light could well have reproduced itself via a set of optical elements present within the camera lens itself. But what is your opinion reader?
