Another unusual sight around Tenterfield has been brought to light with a local resident witnessing something land in Bulwer Street from 90 feet in the air.
John Hinitt was tending to his garden when he heard a loud noise in the sky and saw something plummet towards the ground.
The object was a large piece of plastic and crash landed on power lines at the northern end of Bulwer Street.
The landing occurred on Thursday, July 3 at 12.45 pm and left the local resident baffled to explain how it ended up there.
“I was out in the garden and heard a sound like the banging of a tarpaulin on a trailer,” Mr Hinitt said.
“It was 90 feet in the air...and I didn’t know what the hell it was.”
The object, which stretched the length of a power pole, looked to have an aluminum lining inside it.
“It was a big piece of plastic and looked like it had a rib in it,” Mr Hinitt said.
“It just dropped in the air. I said to my wife to get the camera and I got a photo of it.
“It is unusual to see plastic so big. I rang up the power mob and the police were down there too.”
After recent unexplained sightings of objects in the air, Mr Hinitt first thought it could have been something inexplicable due to its dimensions and the distance it fell to the ground. He later passed some Country Energy workers in town that said it could have been the remains of a weather balloon.
“There were contractors in the park and they said it could have been a weather balloon,” Mr Hinitt said.
“They said they would go up and look at it and see what they could do.”
Country Energy did remove the rogue plastic from the power lines shortly after it fell. Country Energy Manager for Community Relations in the North Region, Leonie McMillan, said that the worker who removed the plastic described it as heavy with a small aluminum frame.
“I spoke to the guy who removed the plastic from the line,” Mrs McMillan said.
“He thought it could have been something that covered a greenhouse.”
The question remains on how it ended up at a high altitude in the sky.
Mrs McMillan said, “Wind is an amazing thing”.
