I ran across this interesting article from the book, " THE NATURE OF MATHEMATICS " by Karl L. Smith , page 170...quoting from the book:

Man who wants to be a number... Minneapolis. At a time when many people complained of losing their identities to a long string of numbers, Michael Herbert Dengler is waging a fight for just that---he wants to be called 1069. Dengler, a teacher turned short order cook, is due in Hennepin County District Court Monday to resume the legal struggle he began four years ago.

The case at one point reached the North Dakota Supreme Court. In rejecting Dengler's plea the court said it was "without precedent in the entire experience of Anglo-American law". So Dengler,32, who once taught social studies in a Fargo N.D. high school, moved to Minneapolis to renew the fight. And until the matter is settled, he's calling himself 1069, pronounced, "one zero six nine," he says.

Dengler says he wants his name changed for personal and philosophic reasons. He says his protracted court battle has resulted in embarrassment and some practical problems. Minnesota refused to issue a drivers license to 1069. And Dengler had trouble landing a job. One company that makes copying machines told him, "You come in here with a name. We'll give you a number".

Four years ago, Dengler circulated a memo among fellow teachers and administrators in Fargo, informing them that henceforth he was to be known as 1069. In the subsequent uproar, Dengler resigned. Dengler says that to understand fully the reasons he wants to change his name, a person must be on his wavelength. Few are, but friends and former colleagues insist he's sincere.

"He was bright, creative, and intelligent", said William Gulickson, principal at Franklin School in Fargo, where Dengler once taught. "He's absolutely sincere about this. This is where he's coming from"......end of article.
