MYSTERY HOLES FOUND IN RICE PADDIES |
|

For generations Chinese farmers have toiled in the rice paddy fields at the foot of scenic Mount Wuyi, Fujian Province but nothing prepared them for what appeared on that tranquil morning of June 28, 2004.
The villagers were perplexed by a series of apparently mysterious events overnight, which left a number of various size holes in several of the cultivated fields around. These measured in diameter from being as small as a table to half the size of a basketball court and were as much as 100 meters apart.
On the day after, the villagers arrived in their fields again only to find the holes had gotten strangely deeper, appearing to have turned into tunnels and in most cases these were filled with water. The people became uneasy and helpless, likening the holes to wheat field circles recorded around the world.
Puzzled, a few wondered if the mystery had any connection with nearby construction of the Beijing to Fuzhou highway, where work might have caused the collapse of unstable subterranean limestone strata.
However, a geological expert carefully analysed the area before concluding that the holes were unlikely the result of a landslide.
