After viewing the above Ohio Mystery Stone picture, reader John K. responded with an interesting and novel solution to the enigma:
Says John, "It struck me that the black portion of the stone (right hand side) looks like a scythe: http://www.informallearning.com/archive/1999-0506-b-scythe.jpg
"If this portion is actually carved into the stone, I'm curious if it was a mold for making a scythe? Heat your metal until it's liquid, then poor it in and let it cool. It could be so dark from extreme heat and iron oxide build up."
