BLANTYRE - Malawi police are hunting for an unidentified wild animal that has killed nine people and injured 11 others in the southern African country, police and hospital authorities have said.
"Yes it's true eight people died on the spot, while 11 others are hospitalised with serious injuries," police spokesman Kelvin Maigwa said.
The ninth person died yesterday afternoon after he was also attacked by the beast in the central region of Dedza, hospital authorities said.
"The body of the latest victim is being brought to the mortuary right now," district health officer Isyu Mwakasungura said, adding that some victims claimed the animal resembled a hyena while others said it had features of a lion.
Police spokesman Maigwa said: "We have sent our men on the ground to shoot the beast."
The injured victims include five children aged between five and 12.
