BRITISH BIG CAT TALES :.
   "MINI-LEOPARD" HIGHWAY SIGHTING STUNS ENGLISHMAN

The elusive Fen Tiger is on the prowl again.

Not long after the News reported a big cat sighting in Cottenham, a large feline has been spotted on the other side of the A14 in Elsworth.

Anne Rayment was leaving her home in The Drift with husband Steve to go to work when she saw the big cat dart across the road.

Mrs Rayment, a customer services officer with South Cambridgeshire District Council, said: "We had just come out the front door. I saw it leap across the road in two leaps into the woods opposite. It was gone in less than 10 seconds.

"I realised it was not a domestic cat. It was about the size of a Labrador. It was very, very dark brown with a thick coat.

"I only saw it from the back as it leaped, very softly, into the wood. Its ears were cat-shaped, and I could see the light through them. Its tail was long and thick and curved. It was a Puma-like tail."

Her husband did not have his glasses on so he did not get a clear view of the cat. And when the couple crossed the road to look into the woods, they could neither see nor hear the creature.

Mrs Rayment said: "We've been here 12 years and never seen anything like it."

A big cat was also seen further south in Shepreth by Anna Sherriff as she walked her dog on Angle Lane. She had crossed the railway track and gone into a field when she first glimpsed the beast.

She said: "I spotted a large black cat sitting in the middle of the path. It was about 100 yards from us.

"I was a little scared and turned around to walk back but didn't for fear the cat would run after us. As we walked back I kept looking to see if it was following - and it was not.

"But when we were 50 yards from the railway line I saw out of the corner of my eye the cat was coming slowly up the field beside us. By this time, I panicked and decided to run the last 50 yards and the cat did not follow us over the railway line."

She said she was concerned as a parent because children, including her son, play in that area.

Terry Dye, from Histon, is one of a group that have been on the trail of the Fen Tiger for years. They have set up a website, http://www.bigcatsinbritain.org/ so anyone who makes a sighting can contact them.

Anyone who sees a big cat can email the group at bigcatsinbritain@btinternet.com
