MOTORISTS REPORT SEEING UNUSUAL ANIMAL IN ABERDEENSHIRE, SCOTLAND

There have been reports of unusual sightings by motorists driving on the A939 Grantown-Tomintoul road east of the Strathspey capital.

A large, dark-coloured animal was spotted running across the carriageway near the Bridge of Brown.

Aberdeenshire motorist Tony Young had been heading west to see friends in Aviemore when he spotted the animal around 9.15pm.

Mr Young said that the most logical explanation was that the animal was a wild boar, but he refused to rule out other possibilities.

Speaking to the 'Strathy' yesterday, he said: "Last Friday night I was travelling over the Lecht from Aberdeen, bound for Aviemore to visit friends. At 9.15pm, still in full daylight, I was about a quarter of a mile east of the small narrow bridge between Bridge of Brown and the Nethy Bridge turn-off when I saw a large, dark-coloured animal run across the road about 20 yards in front of me and disappear into gorse bushes.

"I waited and watched for five minutes, but it didn't reappear. It was of such a size that I decided not to try to flush it out of the gorse!"

Mr Young added: "I think what I saw might have been a wild boar.

"Such an animal was sighted in the Roy Bridge area last year. I am told there is a wild boar farm somewhere in the central Highlands, so this might be an escapee."
