Two Dyfed Powys police officers have confirmed the existence of a big cat in Mid Wales after seeing it for themselves at the weekend.
The officers were part of a patrol tracking the cat after it was believed to have savagely killed a pensioner's dog near Llangadog last week.
Using night vision glasses the officers reported a sighting of what they believed was a big cat in a field adjoining the A40 near Llangadog in the early hours of yesterday morning.
A spokesman for Dyfed Powys Police said: "They were unable to do anything about it because it was moving so quickly and because it would have been unsafe to shoot at it in the hours of darkness," he said.
The results of a post mortem on the dog believed to have been killed by a panther-like animal have confirmed it was killed by a large predator. Further tests are being carried out.
