During excavations of a dolmen, archaeologists in the West Caucasus have found a Bronze Age stone disc with mysterious symbols.
A sandstone disc with unique characters was found in the vicinity of the Russian village of Aguy-Shapsug (Tuapse district of Krasnodar region), by archaeologists researching a four-thousand-year-old dolmen.
In the center of the 27 cm diameter disc they noted a number of characters, the full meaning of which remains unclear.
"Such a find for us was totally unexpected," said the head of the archeological expedition Victor Trifonov, of St Petersburgh.
He hopes to discover the meaning of the symbols left by the people.
Trifonov suggested that "judging by the form of the signs, [...] may be the main symbol of celestial light - Sun and the Moon, and the disc - a tool for astral divination.
"It is likely that the ancestors of these people built the dolmen ".
According to Trifonova, "an exceptional value at settlement dolmenu Aguy-Shapsug attach to the unique circumstances of climatic era bronze, became the cause of the powerful landslide, megalithic crypt cut off the thick layer of clay, sand and pebbles".
