When Sheldon Ruckle was clearing rock from his property and unearthed a boulder with mysterious markings on its underside, he didn't know what to think.
"I was born here, lived my whole life here, and we've always found (Native American) things," Ruckle said. "We've found arrowheads and bones and all kinds of (stuff), so I'm pretty sure it was left here by (Native Americans)."
Ruckle said he has no idea what the rock's mysterious markings could mean, saying he thought they could be a boundary marker, a map or even a tombstone.
The rock was originally in a field on Ruckle's 110 acre farm, but was moved by his brother in the early 1940s.
"Since then it hasn't moved," Ruckle said. "I can guarantee you that. Whoever did this had to have done it way before 1940."
The markings are straight, smooth and even - suggesting they were done on purpose and took significant time to complete.
Ruckle described them as looking like a turkey tail, but said they could represent just about anything if you use your imagination.
In addition, the markings seem to be unfinished.
An incomplete section of carving was started but never completed, suggesting that whoever began the stonework was either interrupted or quit before they were done.
Ruckle said he plans on keeping the stone, but said he wouldn't be surprised if he never found out its true meaning.
