CHINA'S 'BOOK FROM HEAVEN' MYSTERY

In January 2003 China's great Yangtze River ran especially dry and the water level along its banks dropped considerably. It was as a consequence of this phenomenon a rural farmer first stumbled across an enormous, strange, carved stone some 10 square meters in size that had previously lain submerged and unnoticed in the ground.

Three years later this enigmatic stone, now dubbed the "book from heaven", remains something of a riddle for Chinese experts who have yet to successfully decipher the many kinds of inexplicable mystical designs etched across its weathered surfaces.

Incredibly, a concensus of opinion places the inscribed work as having been carried out anywhere from 56,000 and 120,000 years ago!

In China experts are divided over what these unexplained carvings might mean. Some think, because of its close proximity to the Yangtze River, that on this giant rock ancient hydrology records were hewn. Others believe it may display details of sacrificial offerings, perhaps made to appease the nearby river gods. So far, however, the stone's contents has defied all attempts to crack its mysterious code.
